Able To Perform

I still remember the gifts my grandparents gave me on the day of my confirmation in 1982 — a leather hymnal with gold edges that came in a gift box, a white handkerchief and a bookmark.

Thirty-five years later, the hymnal and handkerchief are gone but I still have the bookmark. On the back of it is says von deinen Großeltern 1982 (from your grandparents 1982). I haven’t paid much attention to the saying on the front of it until a few years ago. That time the sentence Was Gott verheisst, das kann Er auch tun (God is able to do what He has promised) had a major impact on my life.

I started my journey as a “Christian by tradition”. In the 90s I became a flying high newborn child of God. Trials and hardships came into my life and for a while I felt drawn to the health-wealth-preaching. It wasn’t so much the health nor the wealth I needed but the faith of knowing that God is great and able to do anything — something I had lost in my earlier childhood years.

During a tough time in my life I came across this bookmark again. I read the saying on it, looked up the verse and kept on reading. That was so soothing and so full of healing! I treasure this bookmark very much. Today it is back in my Bible to remind me daily to be fully convinced that God is able to do what He has promised.
