While walking on the beach this morning I stumbled over a piece of beach-glass:
I thought, “This looks like a print of a baby’s foot.” It was yet another reminder of what’s going on in Ireland at the moment. Soon, on the 25th of May 2018, the Irish will vote by referendum: NO (to keep the 8th) vs. YES (to repeal the 8th).
What does God’s Word say? When does life begin? Life and death — choose today! What are the consequences to follow?
The Bible says that we are fearfully and wonderfully made: God’s works are marvellous. He made us. He formed us. He knew us even before we were born. (Psalm 139:13-16; Jeremiah 1:5 — and many other verses in the Bible)
Know the Right Question!
Before the vote, and to make the right choice, the Irish people need to know what they are being asked: “Do you want to repeal the Eighth Amendment or not?”
What the Eighth Amendment (Already) Says
In the Constitution of Ireland it says that: The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn, and with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.
There are already many discussions going on about this topic and a lot of arguments are out there— For time sake I will not list them here. However, I do want to mention that doctors in Ireland will chose to save the life of a pregnant woman — even if this would mean that her baby could die (before, during, or after birth) because, for medical reasons, they had to induce the labor. Of course, they will also do everything possible to save the (premature) baby’s life. People who carefully read the wording of the amendment above will notice that this is already written in the law and that there is absolutely no need to repeal the 8th Amendment.
Know the Right Answer!
God’s Word is not hidden from us. It’s very near and clearly written for us: Life and good, death and evil are set before us — So that we can make the right choice. (Deuteronomy 30:11-15)
Pro-Life people want to keep the amendment and are asking the people to vote “No” (= don’t repeal but keep the 8th). Pro-Choice people want to repeal the 8th and therefore are asking the nation to vote “Yes”.
Know the Consequences!
If we turn our hearts away if we ignore that we have to open our mouth and defend the helpless then we will not be blessed but bear the consequences. (Deuteronomy 30:11-20; Proverbs 24:10-11; Proverbs 31:8)
A repeal would mean that abortions would become legal in Ireland. Beware, that this would also mean that the Irish people are handing back the power over this issue to the politicans. From then on, any further discussions about age restrictions of the child in the womb, reasons for abortions, etc. would lie solely in the politician’s hands.
