In His Hands

I love to go for walks at the beach in the morning. This morning the tide was out and there was plenty of space for the dogs to run. 😉 compared to times when the tide is in; then the beach is only about 3-5m (10-15′) wide.

I often stop and look across the Irish Sea, dwelling on how amazing God is!

The Bible says that God made the sea (Psalm 95:5) and that the sea obeys Him (Matthew 8:27). How wonderful to know that the sea is in His Hands.

As long as the tide is far out we feel safe on our own, don’t we? Once the tide is coming in some of us will get into a more or less desperate situation, especially if we have walked out too far. People on a boat don’t worry much, as long as the water and wind stays still. But what if the storm hits and the waves are getting higher and higher?

God did not only create the world and everything in it, but every thing and every soul He created is in His Hands. True, to some people this makes no sense at all. When hardship strikes some of us struggle and doubt that there is a God. Yes, not the sea only but life also gets pretty rough at times.

Yet, God is with us! The Bible is full of examples that God is with His people, that He never leaves nor forsakes them. When Joseph was taken captive to Egypt, God was right there with him. Later on, it was the strong hand of the LORD who brought Israel out of Egypt. He provided food and water for them in the wilderness and guided them through it:

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people. (Exodus 13:21-22)

We so often see the ocean of our problems in front of us and cannot imagine — or find it hard to believe — that God can part that ocean and make a safe path through it for us. We walk in darkness and look for any kind of light but the pillar of God to guide us through it. We need to draw near to God — go to Him in prayer and praising Him — and remember that our lives and our times are in His Hands.
