Response to Trials and Troubles

When trials and troubles hit where do we go for advice? What’s our first reaction? Where do we seek counsel? From whom do we expect help?

Let’s read Psalm 63 carefully:

1 O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.
2 So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.
3 Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips shall praise You,
4 Thus I will bless You while I live;
I will lift up my hands in Your name.
5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness,
And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.
6 When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.
7 Because You have been my help,
Therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.
8 My soul follows close behind You;
Your right hand upholds me.
9 But those who seek my life, to destroy it,
Shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
10 They shall fall by the sword;
They shall be a portion for jackals.
11 But the king shall rejoice in God;
Everyone who swears by Him shall glory;
But the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.

Within three sections, we find comforting and helpful advice:

  1. Seek God! (verses 1-5)
  2. Remember His faithfulness. (verses 6-8)
  3. Know that God is just. (verses 9-11)

Seek God. Believe first that there is a God.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Seek Him and love Him. Love the LORD, your God, with all of your heart, and with all of your soul, and with all your might (Deuteronomy 6:5).

Remember God’s faithfulness. Look back at the times when He has lead you through difficulties. Even if it seemed that God is silent hasn’t He been there with you all along? It’s important to remember His faithfulness — and that’s why we must continue to praise His works to another and declare His mighty acts to one another.

Know that God is just. There are times when evil seems to take over and win. Trust in God and know that Jesus has already won the victory! Know that the wicked will be stopped and punished in due time.

Press on! God is Love! The LORD, our God, remains in control.
