The Worth Of a Wife

Who can find a virtuous wife?
For her worth is far above rubies.

Proverbs 31:10

LORD Jesus, we praise You for You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Help us to seek Your Face and to do Your Will. Enable us to read and study Your Word and to live a life that is pleasing and honoring You. In Jesus’ precious name we pray. Amen.

How do you feel while reading Proverbs 31:10-31? What do you think about the virtuous wife? Would you like to have some of her character traits? Do you wish you could be the woman she was?

Honestly? My hope to ever become exactly like her decreases with each time I’m reading this Bible passage. Do I still want to be like that virtuous wife? Of course I do.

Our problem doesn’t begin by reading what God’s Word says about this picture-perfect virtuous woman. What will drive us to despair is looking at other women and wanting to be what they are or longing to have what they have.

Remember what I’ve said in the post Question—Why Did God Make Woman?

“Your man was alone, but God didn’t want him to stay alone, and so He made you especially for this man. Just as no other could ever fill the void of your heart except for Christ the LORD, so no other woman could ever be what you are to your man.”

God Almighty has made you specifically for your (own) man. You do not, and should never want to, please Mr Adam (Miller, Smith, whatever his name is). You need the trust of your own husband and look after him that he doesn’t lack what you should provide for him.

“But you don’t understand. I cannot fulfill my role right now.”

Okay, let me ask you this: Why not? Because you don’t “feel” like it? I’m sorry, but we need to play our roles whether we feel like it or not.

Or is it because in this moment of your life you think you are not capable to? If you feel you are inadequate because you are restricted — by depression, sickness or for any other understandable reason — I want you to know that God knew exactly what He was doing when He has made you and He knows that only you are the woman your man needs.

“But what could I do? I can’t even accomplish the smallest of tasks. I’m not worth to be called my husband’s helper.”

Precious sister, is it that you lack self-confidence? Good! Do not look what others are doing nor listen to what the world expects you to do! Many of them want you to find confidence in self. Instead, gain confidence and purpose in what God’s Word says — because,

Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.

Proverbs 31:30

Your man was not supposed to be alone. So God made you to be his helper. You don’t need to be what you or others expect you to be. Often enough the best thing you can do is “just be there” for your man.

Fear the LORD. Love Him with all your heart, and mind, and soul today.
