“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.
For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
Exodus 20:8-11
LORD Jesus, we praise You for You have made everything perfect in its time. We thank You for Your Word because it is Truth. Guide us, O LORD we pray, in seeking You and Your will in our life. In Jesus’ precious name we pray. Amen.
The Ten Commandments start of by God telling us that He is the One who has brought us out of the house of bondage. Is this not more than enough reason to remember and rest in Him — at least one day of the week?
God says that we should work on six days, but that on the seventh day it is the Sabbath of the LORD our God. After six days of hard work our body and our mind need a rest. So the seventh day is not a time for sports and exercise, nor was it meant to flood our minds with the things of this world. It is a time to rest in the LORD.
Our body needs a rest. It strengthens us and keeps us running the following week. If we neglect to rest our body we end up being less productive.
Our soul can become weary from all the hustle and bustle going on throughout the week. There is so much on our mind that we do not find the time to wind down (find a good deal of rest) during the week. If we do not take care to be still we will not find rest for our soul.
Following a lot of work and teaching, Jesus told the apostles to:
“Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”
Mark 6:31
Matthew Henry comments on this verse that,
There is no remaining rest for the people of God till they come to heaven.
Have you come to Christ Jesus yet? Seek Him, and find Him. He will give you rest!
