Titus 2 Women — Part 11

to be discreet,
chaste,
homemakers,
good,
obedient to their own husbands,
that the word of God may not be blasphemed.

Titus 2:5

LORD Jesus, we praise You that You have not left us alone. You are giving us directions through God’s Word and by the Holy Spirit. Help us in learning and teaching what the Bible says about us and what we should do. Guide us to obedience and give us the boldness to stand up for what is right. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen.

READ — Today’s Verse

TO BE DISCREET, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.

ENGAGE — Words and their meanings

_____

Discreet. Watch the correct spelling! Be careful to spell it discreet and not discrete.
Look up the word in various dictionaries. Begin your search using one or the other Bible dictionary. Strong’s would give you a good start showing you the original (Hebrew/Greek) word and its meaning along with some cross references. Next, look up “discreet” in some of the other dictionaries (old and new ones). Go online to find sources if you do not have printed versions at home (e.g. Noah Webster’s http://webstersdictionary1828.com or here https://edl.byu.edu/webster for the older editions). Make some notes and compare if/how the meaning of the word “discreet” might have changed over the years.

APPLY — Understand the Language and Explain

If you do know what certain passages of Scripture and/or words in the Bible mean you are able to explain them to others. The meaning of words can change in an instant in this world, but God’s Word never changes. So let me suggest that you more often stick to the Bible and well known Bible (and older) dictionaries to gain insight into the definition of words, verses, chapters, and books of the Bible.

By the way, some of the words opposite in meaning to “discreet” are: indiscreet, immodest, bold, forward, and cheeky.

DO — Think

Think of situations in which women behaved inappropriately. What are some of the ways that you could teach your daughter/s and other young women what the word means — and what God’s Word is telling us to be? Explain and teach how they can discern what is appropriate for them and how they can avoid extremes.

Encourage a young woman today to make a difference in this world.
