But take careful heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you,
to love the LORD your God,
to walk in all His ways,
to keep His commandments,
to hold fast to Him, and
to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
LORD Jesus, we praise You for You are Love. Your Love is amazing and so is Your abundant Mercy. Forgive us, O God we pray, whenever we are trying to fight life’s battles in our own strength. You are God Most High and there is none like You. Enable us to love You, LORD, to walk in Your ways, to keep Your commandments, to hold fast to You, and to serve You with all of our heart and with all of our soul. In Jesus’ precious name we pray. Amen.
At the beginning of Joshua 22 two and a half tribes of Israel are praised for keeping what has been commanded them to do. Before their departure to Gilead, Joshua reminds them of the importance of loving God and their obedience to Him (v5). The chapter continues telling us about the strife that emerged and of a war that almost broke out between the two and a half tribes and their brethren. Obedience to God was the key that played a crucial part in preventing a battle between the tribes of Israel.
How easy it is to say that we love and serve the LORD our God. Jesus says:
If you love Me, keep My commandments.
(see also Luke 6:46 & 1 John 5:2-3)
Do we really love Him? Then we will need to choose to obey and serve Him, and not bow down to foreign gods. Obedience to God is the key for loving Him.
Joshua 24:14-15, as well as other verses within God’s Word, call us to choose between good and evil — between God Almighty and gods that are powerless.
“Now therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD!
And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Take careful heed to yourself, that you love the LORD your God today.
