One Generation to the Next

We will not hide them from their children,
Telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD,
And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.

Psalm 78:4

What is your favorite cake? Do you have any instructions on how to make it? Perhaps its recipe has been passed on within your family and over many generations? Or do you regret that your mom or your grandma has neither made note of it nor kept it for you?

How about a certain kind of crochet or knitting pattern that has been used to create one of your most loved sweaters? Did you ever learn how to make this type of crochet or knitting work? Has anyone ever taught you how to do it? Anyone?

Two of my grand-aunts, Elisabeth and Pauline, have baked the best ever Christmas cookies in the whole world! I tell you, all of these cookies looked like they have been ordered from a confectionery shop, and they melted in the mouth like none other. The recipes for these cookies? Lisl always hid them away from others, and she would make a big fuss out of keeping them “her secret.” Both of my grand-aunts are dead by now, and their “Weihnachtsbäckerei” collection is gone as well, I’m afraid.

There is so much knowledge that we could be handing down to the next generation: recipes for baking and cooking, tips on gardening and how to grow our own fruits and vegetables, instructions on the building and restoration of furniture pieces, information on how to create and repair clothing and other things for the home — and, most importantly we need to inform the coming generations about the Creator and Savior of the world!

This psalm makes it very clear: We must not hide God’s Word from our children, but we have to tell the generation/s to come (4). God commands the older generation that they should tell the younger (5), so that the next generation will know and pass it on to their own children (6).

God’s Word needs to go to all generations so

That they may set their hope in God,
And not forget the works of God,
But keep His commandments;

Psalm 78:7

Show the next generation the praises of the LORD today.
