Who or What Is Number One in Your Life?

You shall love the LORD your God
with all your heart,
with all your soul,
and with all your strength.

(Deuteronomy 6:5)

Last week, I asked you,

Who or What Comes First in Your Life?

We have to seek the answer to this question. It is important for us to know with whom or what we are spending our time with. So let’s repeat the following questions from last week and think about this over the next few minutes. Get a pen and a piece of paper to write it down if you would like to.

Who or what is found at the top of your priority list?

Is it,

  • a person? (Who?)
  • a unique task (What?)
  • a part of your own or your children’s education? (Class/Course you are attending or the preparing and studying for it?)
  • a specific area of your homemaking and/or working from home?
  • a good deed like helping out at a charity place?
  1. ____________
  2. ____________
  3. ____________
  4. ____________
  5. ____________

The list could go on and on, but in the life of a Christian, Christ must clearly have top priority—before any other person or task or anything else in our life.

You say that for a Christian this is an easy decision to make? I agree. How about living it out, though? There have been, and still are, days in my life when I fail to put God at the very beginning of my day, week, month or even the year.

What does it mean to write the name of the LORD next to 1) ? What special place, what right, what kind of attention, what love is required for that special Someone to continue to be our number One?

Today’s verse is asking us to love the LORD our God,

with all our hearts,
with all our souls,
and with all our strength. (Matthew 22:37 and Luke 10:27 mention our minds, too)

True, if we love Him, we cannot but talk (to others) about Him. On the other side, we can talk a lot about Him, without truly loving Him. Jesus says,

If you love Me, keep My commandments.

(John 14:15)

Obedience is the key. How, though, can we obey His commandments if we do not know them? How can we trust what He says and commands if we do not know Him? We have to get to know the LORD and listen to what He says and requires of us.

Make it a top priority in your life to meet with God and to study His Word today.
